Following three years of intensive research, the institution's team has demonstrated that a protein extracted from this native species contains hirudin, a compound with anticoagulant properties comparable to heparin, the standard pharmaceutical agent used worldwide to prevent blood clotting. The discovery, revealed recently by UMK Faculty of Agro-Based Industry senior lecturer Dr Zulhisyam Abdul Kari, opens a new avenue for biotechnological development in Southeast Asia and underscores Malaysia's potential as a source of innovative medical solutions derived from its rich biodiversity.
